Choosy Chicks Choose Chicklets Design Challenge & Hop

Toltec Jewels, of the Jewel School Friends Blog, is hosting, with Sue Kennedy of SueBeads blog and shop, a fun bloghop featuring SueBeads Chicklet beads, the Choosy Chicks Choose Chicklets Design Challenge!

The Chicklet beads are fun little bits of beads (okay, they're whole beads, but they're little bitty beads!) with a flower design pressed into each side.  They're so cute!!! As part of the design challenge, each of the designers (you can find the list below, at the bottom of this post) received a chicklet bead.  We each received a different color bead, and had to create something with it.   I received a lovely reddish brown chicklet bead. One of my favorite colors.

I had a hard time initially with this challenge, because I felt all my ideas overwhelmed the bead. I pondered bead-weaving, treating it like a cab and framing it, stringing it with other beads. Nothing worked for me. And it's so cute, I really wanted to showcase it!

So, finally, I went back to a favorite technique, chainmaille.  One of the things I love about the SueBead Chicklet is the low profile it has. Its a nice, flat bead, perfect for a bracelet for a klutzy chick (that would be me, btw...) With that in mind, I decided to use an equally "low profile" chainmaille weave, the helms weave. I combined wonderful Kelly-green rings with simple copper to keep the focus on the bead, and added a bit of czech glass to give it some sparkle.  Take a look!

Blu Mudd Design Challenge, Round 3!! GO VOTE!!!

Hiya folks!  So, I'm part of the Blu Mudd Design Challenge, currently in it's THIRD round! :)  The idea is that Moriah, of Owner of Blu Mudd, makes a FABULOUS focal something (pendant, bracelet bar, etc) and we make pretties!  You know I LOVE my pretties.  :)

Well, this time, she offered us this FABULOUS butterfly bracelet bar!

Pretty, yes? :) 

I decided I REALLY wanted to try my hand at more chainmaille, so I settled on a dragonscale weave, because it would have the same idea of shape as the focal. And I decided to use silver and purple rings to make it FABULOUS!  Here's what I came up with:

It's TIME!!!!!! :)

The ingredients were gathered, the spices were added, the soup simmered, and now it's time to serve!!!!!  :)  YAY!!!!

Okay, first, I've gotta give love and hugs to our fearless leader, Lori, of the Pretty Things Blog.  I have NO IDEA how she organizes this thing!  But I'm SO GLAD she does!!!  And of course I also have to give big hugs to Robin of Artistry HCBD, my partner.  She sent me a FABULOUS soup (you can find the ingredients here!!)  I had so much fun!!!

So, I recently decided to try learning something new--chainmaille (more on that later!) and really wanted to incorporate that into my designs for this bead soup.  So, here it is!

I decided to make 2 bracelets with my soup, one to use each of the required pieces.  Here they are together:

This is the bracelet where I used the focal--that fabulous striped jasper (you can see it better in the next pic).  I used several of the other beads Robin sent me (SO many left!  Oh, the fun I could have, still!!!) and also added a 2-inch section of European 4-in-1 chainmaille that I learned:

 The focal, some danglies, and what I think might (maybe) be an onyx? I don't know.  I love it...  :)

 And this is the 2nd bracelet, using that beautiful clasp and the GORGEOUS large howlite (I think) round bead Robin sent me! I continued the chainmaille bits with 4 mobius spacers between crystals.

I LOVE the mix of beads Robin sent me--SO MANY things I don't usually use.  And, with the exception of the rings I used in the maille and the clasp on the jasper bracelet, EVERY item used in these bracelets was sent to me by Robin!  Normally, I'm a very worrisome designer, making sure that things are matchy-matchy.  Ever since the mismatched earrings I made last year, I've been working on NOT matching.  I really felt the mix of beads Robin sent me allowed me to expand that into bracelet making (normally, crystals would be with crystals, and naturals would be with naturals.  It's just how I was...) and I LOVE that I was able to effectively combine natural stones with glass crystals and have the whole look so wonderful!
